A DNA Link between Diabetes and Obesity
There is no known reason for what causes diabetes. There are certainly risk factors that make the likelihood of you being diagnosed with the disease higher. One of the only risk factors that you have control over is your weight. If you are obese, the single best thing you can do for your health and the prevention of diabetes is to lose weight. Even in small increments, when you shed pounds you are increasing your health benefits.
These may be easier said than done. There are new studies that are now showing that there is a genetic factor or mutation for people who are obese and have diabetes. This genetic malfunction affects how the bodies use energy and insulin – two key elements in the functioning of your body and the cause of diabetes and obesity

Relieving Depression from the Inside
Everybody gets down or feels blue from time to time. It’s a natural thing. But others get truly and seriously depressed – unable to cope with day-to-day life or to live their lives in anything resembling a normal fashion.
Depression comes in many forms, and affects more than 18 million American adults each year. Over a million preschoolers have currently been diagnosed as clinically depressed. 15% of most developed countries suffer from severe depression, and 30% of women suffer from depression – and 41% of those won’t seek treatment. In fact, 80% of the people who are now suffering from any form of depression are not currently being treated. Many simply don’t recognize the signs.

Elgin Mental Health Center – More Than Just a Psychiatric Facility
If a friend or someone in the family is to be treated in a mental facility, we try to find the best facility for them. After all, the goal is for them to get well, and we believe that our choice of hospital is vital for the person’s recovery. In Illinois, when we speak of psychiatric facilities, one hospital easily comes to mind. That is Elgin Mental Health Center or EMHC.
As the second oldest state hospital in Illinois, this facility opened in 1872 under its former name, Northern Illinois Hospital and Asylum for the Insane. The first-ever physiological measurements of mental patients were recorded by the Elgin Papers back in the 1890s. By 1997, the Joint Commission for the Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations gave EMHC its commendation for two years in a row.

The Many Faces of Depression
Estimates of depression rates vary considerably but it has been suggested that it will occur in 15 – 20 % of all people over a lifetime. In every 12 months about 10% of the population experiences an episode of significant depression. At this moment it is estimated that 121 million people are suffering from depression throughout the world. Depression is a major problem.
Depression typically has the symptoms of sadness, loss of energy, feelings of guilt and anxiety and loss of self esteem. There can be changes in appetite and sleep. The depressive illness can range from interfering with our usual activities and relationships (mild to moderate depression) to making it hard to relate or communicate with others or to do day-to-day tasks ( debilitating or severe depression). Depression symptoms can affect anyone regardless of race, culture and social class. It can affect men, women, children, adolescents and the elderly. However, how a depressed preschooler looks will probably be different from an 80 year old.
